At Washington University, faculty from a variety of disciplines have collaborated with The Teaching Center to develop teaching approaches that promote active learning with flexible technological tools, such as SMART Boards and tablet PCs. First begun in upper-division courses in Chemistry, these projects have expanded to include a writing-intensive course in Biology and a course in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.
These projects have been generously supported by two Technology for Teaching Leadership grants from Hewlett-Packard.
Preliminary studies on the approaches used in several of these courses has suggested that incorporating active learning with flexible technology can improve student learning and participation.
