(Re)Thinking Annotation: Digital Practices for Collaboration and Communication
Digital forms of communication expose the exploratory thinking that happens outside the classroom, and capture students’ ideas about the course content that instructors don’t often see. As the various tools and applications offer modes of expression and formats that integrate the opportunity for feedback as well as collaborative authoring, they make visible ideas, questions, and insights that can be further discussed in class or developed in formal assignments.
This workshop will explore practical and creative ways to use technology in the classroom. Participants will engage with annotation and communication tools and learn how they can be used to create original content and activities for their own teaching purposes The workshop examines way of incorporating apps into the classroom in order to make visible ideas, questions, and insights of multiple students simultaneously that can then be further discussed in class or developed into formal assignments, and expand the repertoire of activities that can be completed outside of the traditional classroom setting.
This workshop will be offered in a blended format. Workshop participants will complete an activity prior coming to the shorter, in-person session, as well as a follow-up activity. All three components must be completed to receive a certificate of participation that can be used toward Teaching Center professional development programs, such as The Teaching Citation: 1) pre-workshop activity, 2) workshop session, 3) post-workshop activity.
