While the classroom can be a space for open, respectful discussion of sensitive or controversial topics, facilitating such discussions can be a challenging prospect. This workshop for Washington University faculty will provide the opportunity to develop strategies for fostering critical thinking, open-mindedness, and civil discourse in the classroom. Topics will include the following:
Establishing ground-rules for respectful dialogue and debate
Designing a clear structure to guide challenging conversations in the classroom
Developing facilitation strategies that encourage the class to understand and value diverse perspectives
Effectively managing and responding to intense disagreement or other “hot moments” in the classroom
