Advanced-Level; Satisfies requirements for the Professional Development in Teaching program
While the classroom can be a space for open, respectful discussion of sensitive or controversial topics, facilitating such discussions can be a challenging prospect. This advanced-level workshop for graduate students and postdocs in the humanities, arts, and social sciences will provide the opportunity for participants to develop strategies for fostering critical thinking, open-mindedness, and civil discourse in the classroom. Participants will engage with strategies for laying the groundwork necessary for having challenging conversations, learn approaches for responding to unexpectedly “hot moments,” and practice applying the strategies we discuss to common instructional situations.
NOTE: This workshop does not fulfill DBBS requirements.
Facilitator: Dr. Meg Gregory, Assistant Director, Academic Services, The Teaching Center
