Dissecting the Classroom
In the article, “Dissecting the Classroom“, from the Chronicle of Higher Education, Dan Berrett describes the procedure for, and importance of, classroom observation protocols. During a classroom observation, an individual will document both what the instructor is doing and what the students are doing at periodic intervals throughout the class. Through these observations instructors are able to gain insight into the way they are interacting with students and knowledge about students’ levels of engagement.
The Teaching Center has partnered with CIRCLE to develop a similar protocol to those discussed in this article entitled the Observation Protocol for Active Learning (OPAL). Follow this link to learn more about the work being done at Washington University related to classroom observations.
