WU-CIRTL
In 2011, Washington University became a member of the CIRTL Network. The Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL) is a network of universities dedicated to preparing future faculty (graduate students and postdoctoral appointees) who will be equipped to meet the challenges of improving learning and increasing diversity in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the CIRTL Network began with 6 universities: Howard, Michigan State, Texas A & M, Colorado at Boulder, Wisconsin-Madison, and Vanderbilt. In 2011, the Network expanded to 25 universities, including Washington University in St. Louis.
The goal of CIRTL is to "to improve the STEM learning of all students at every college and university, and thereby to increase the diversity in STEM fields and the STEM literacy of the nation." CIRTL Network universities pursue this shared goal through programs informed by the 3 CIRTL pillars: teaching as research, learning communities, and learning through diversity.
The WU-CIRTL program for future faculty is open to Washington University graduate students and postdoctoral appointees in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
