Designing and Planning a Course

Date:
Fri., Nov. 20, 2009 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Location:
Eads Hall, Rm. 217

This workshop for junior faculty will explore the process of course planning and designing. Good course design is fundamental to effective teaching and improved student learning; most of us start with deciding what material we want to cover and end with how we can determine what students have learned. In this workshop, we will discuss the "backward design" model, which begins with student learning, and we will learn how to implement this model in our course planning.

Topics include

  • identifying the students,
  • establishing the course goals and objectives,
  • selecting and arranging course content,
  • evaluating student learning, and
  • choosing teaching methods.

This workshop will be led by Gina Frey, Ph.D., director of The Teaching Center.

Registration is required. Enrollment is limited to 15.

A box-lunch will be provided; we will send an email to registrants asking for lunch choice one week before the workshop.
