Consultations and Teaching Evaluations for Graduate Students

Personal Appointments
Pat Brown, assistant director, and Beth Fisher, associate director, are available to meet with graduate students for teaching consultations and evaluations. Possible topics to address include

  • improving effectiveness in leading discussions and delivering lectures,
  • responding to teaching evaluations,
  • encouraging student participation,
  • developing assignments, communicating with the course master, and
  • solving problems in the classroom.

Dr. Brown and Dr. Fisher also available to consult on teaching-development topics, such as writing a teaching philosophy statement, creating a teaching portfolio, preparing for the academic job market, and completing the requirements for the Teaching Citation.

To schedule a teaching consultation, please contact Beth Fisher, associate director of The Teaching Center, either by email, or by phone at 935-5921.

Teaching Evaluations
Graduate students seeking a teaching evaluation should contact The Teaching Center to schedule videotaping of the class session during which they would like to have their teaching evaluated. After the class session has been videotaped, the graduate student will meet with either Pat Brown or Beth Fisher to review and discuss the tape. Dr. Brown or Dr. Fisher will also provide a written evaluation of the graduate students' teaching and will make suggestions as appropriate. In some cases, the teaching evaluation will be completed via an in-class observation, rather than a videotape.

All consulting sessions are confidential, and all videotapes become the property of the requesting graduate students.

To schedule a teaching  evaluation, please submit the requested information on this online form.
