Teaching with Writing: Assignments and Evaluation

The Teaching Center and the College of Arts and Sciences offer a Teaching with Writing workshop every semester for faculty who use writing in their courses. The workshop is a series of 2 sessions, which are intended to assist faculty in designing and evaluating writing assignments. Enrollment is limited to 12; each participant should attend both sessions. Participants will receive Joseph Williams’s Style: Ten Lessons in Clarity and Grace (Longman); Andrea Lunsford’s The St. Martin’s Handbook (Bedford-St. Martin’s); Harvey Gordon’s Writing with Sources: A Guide for Students (Hackett); John C. Bean’s Engaging Ideas (Jossey-Bass); and Barbara E. Walvoord and Virginia J. Anderson’s Effective Grading (Jossey-Bass).

You should consider taking part in this workshop if you

  • expect students to write papers or essay exams during your course
  • want feedback on an existing or new writing assignment
  • are teaching or preparing to teach a Writing-Intensive course
  • want to know how to respond more effectively to student writing
  • want to learn from colleagues in other disciplines

The Grading Process Workshop

The Teaching Center offers The Grading Process workshop during the week before the fall semester starts. This workshop is intended for faculty members who would like a better understanding of the principles and practice of grading. Topics include identifying the principles that inform grading; selecting a grading approach; connecting grading to course objectives, assignments, and testing; and communicating with students about grades and grading policies. Enrollment is limited to 15. Participants will receive Barbara E. Walvoord and Virginia Johnson Anderson’s Effective Grading (Jossey-Bass) and J.C. Ory and Katherine Ryan’s Tips for Improving Testing and Grading (Sage).

Workshops for Junior Faculty

These one-hour workshops are held during the noon hour in the fall and spring semesters. Specifically designed for junior faculty, these workshops explore teaching in higher education and at Washington University specifically. The workshops are limited to 15 participants. Registration for each workshop is required, and a box lunch is provided.
