Programs and Services for Faculty

Assistant Professor Parikh, AnthropologyThe Teaching Center supports excellence in teaching by faculty through workshops, consulting, and pedagogical scholarship. In addition to teaching workshops that are open to all faculty, The Teaching Center offers a junior-faculty workshop series for assistant professors. Gina Frey, director of The Teaching Center and senior lecturer in chemistry, develops these workshops and provides consultations for faculty interested in integrating new pedagogical methods into their teaching. To support these services, The Teaching Center staff conducts pedagogical scholarship, in coordination with other departments and centers. In addition, Gina Frey and assistant director Pat Brown work with faculty to design and conduct studies on teaching and learning at Washington University.

The Teaching Center develops a number of online faculty resources,Professor Karamustafa, History including the Teaching Commentaries video series, a new program that features insights on teaching by some of the University's most recognized teachers. In addition, The Teaching Center staff write Teaching Tips, a collection of online handouts on a variety of teaching topics from Designing a Course to Increasing Student Participation. Associate director Beth Fisher develops these online resources, in collaboration with Gina Frey and Pat Brown.

With Arts & Sciences and University Libraries, The Teaching Center coordinates ITeach: Teaching and Technology. The ITeach program features innovation by Washington University faculty through a biannual symposium, a semi-annual newsletter, and online resources. The Teaching Center designs and maintains the University-managed classrooms, trains faculty on how to use the classroom multimedia systems, and provides on-call support to faculty.
