Alternatives to Traditional Exams for Online Learning
With the outbreak of COVID-19, many instructors shifted from face-to-face instruction to online teaching. Given this situation, instructors must consider alternatives to traditional exams, writes Lucinda Parmer, associate professor in the John Massey School of Business teaching in the Management and Marketing Department at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, in a recent blog post on The Scholarly Teacher.
In the post, Parmer outlines many alternative exam formats including project-based learning (PBL), which requires students to work on a semester-long project highlighting the main ideas and concepts of the course’s learning objectives. Other examples include take-home exams, open book exams, and portfolios where students can display their work.
