6th Annual Teaching Center Graduate Student and Postdoc Recognition Reception

Denise presents certificates to SoTL class participants

The Teaching Center’s 6th Annual Graduate Student and Postdoc Recognition Reception took place on Tuesday, May 1st 2018 in Rettner Gallery in the Laboratory Sciences Building on the Danforth Campus. During the celebration, 79 graduate students and postdocs from across both campuses and many departments were honored for their involvement with the Teaching Center’s professional development programs. The annual event makes visible participants’ commitment to pedagogical training and reflective teaching practices.

Among the honorees were the three finishers of the Preparation in Pedagogy program, a workshop-intensive professional development program for graduate students and postdocs, and the eleven participants who completed the Teaching Citation. Teaching Citation, developed and facilitated in partnership with the Graduate School, marries training through advanced-level pedagogy workshops Siera Stoen and Roger Kline achieve WU-CIRTL Scholarwith three semesters of reflective teaching. The event also honored WU-CIRTL participants who had achieved various programmatic levels (community member, associate, practitioner, scholar) during the 2017-2018 school year. This year, two graduate students, Roger Klein, DBBS, and Siera Stoen, Physics, achieved the highest level of WU-CIRTL by completing and presenting on a scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) project.

The thirteen members of the Teaching Center’s Graduate Student Advisory Group were also honored for their service to the Teaching Center at this event. The group meets once a month during the school year to provide the Teaching Center with their suggestions for upcoming programming. They also facilitate monthly teaching-related professional development events open to all WashU graduate students.Poster presentations

During the Recognition Reception, students from the Introduction to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning course presented their final project posters, which detail their plans for SoTL research. The projects’ topics ranged from a comparison of active learning methods to utilizing augmented reality models in a geoscience classroom.

Along with an opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments, the reception provided honorees, their guests, and administrators with the chance to foster further interdisciplinary conversations about teaching and learning. Good food and great conversations about teaching were had by all. See below for a complete list of this year’s honorees.
